Science of Facial Reconstruction

This year, we celebrate the 75th anniversary (1947-2022) of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS). The need for a society focused on not only soft tissue but also injury involving the maxillofacial skeleton became apparent soon after the start of World War I (1914-1918). With advancing weapon technology in the setting of trench warfare, large volumes of survivable maxillofacial injuries necessitated the search for more effective treatments and thus, the formation of specialized maxillofacial units in Europe and the United States. [1] Maxillofacial injuries have two distinguishing features that when combined are unique among military injuries: survivability, yet severe disfigurements that dressings or clothing alone cannot hide.

American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons ASMS Position Statement on Gun Safety
As plastic surgeons who care for patients with ballistic injuries to the face and cranium, we witness the devastating damages from gun violence on a daily basis. We strongly support the 13 recommendations based on public safety principles recently released by the Firearm Strategy Team of American College of Surgeons-Committee on Trauma. Specifically, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons supports the following legislative efforts for gun safety at the federal and state levels.
  1. Improve the access and funding for mental health
  2. Increase the resources for and training of law enforcement personnel
  3. Ban on assault-style weapons
  4. Raise the legal age for gun purchase to 21 years
  5. Programs to remove firearms from those deemed an imminent threat to self or others such as Extreme Risk Protection Order policies, Red Flag laws, and other similar state and federal laws
  6. Effective and efficient background check
  7. Limit magazine capacity
  8. National 3 digit hotline: 988 for suicide prevention and mental health crisis

American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) Mission
The American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons strongly condemns the senseless, violent actions occurring in Ukraine by Russia. We are appalled and deeply saddened by the widespread destruction, devastating injuries and loss of life among the citizens of Ukraine. We join the entire world and our fellow surgeons in Ukraine in demanding an immediate end to this war, ending the human suffering there, with a return to a peaceful, free and healthy country.

Join the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) proposed humanitarian surgery mission - please send your availability (for May and June), so they can plan accordingly, to SUSEI@sunnybrook.ca.
